August went so quickly… and work has been so hectic, but will only get worse in September. But I don’t want to talk about it as it actually makes me feel sick.

Lord of Reads

So… out of 10 books, I completed 2 and am currently reading 3. Not great, but better than nothing!

Apples Dipped in Gold; Scarlett St. Clair ⭐⭐⭐

Spy X Family, Volume 9; Tatsuya Endo ⭐⭐⭐.75

I read both of these books for my ‘How many books can I finish using Disney Land wait times?’ post.

TV Series

‘Dept. Q’ was the first series I completed in August and I’m happy to know that it’s been renewed for a second series. The mystery was so well played and done in such a way that kept you guessing. With 9 episodes, the twists and action were well paced. I loved the main characters and their interactions felt natural. The already established relationships felt real, and the growing ones were lovely. Akram, played by Alexej Manvelov, is perfect and I will not hear otherwise!

My only issue is the inclusion of some romantic tension between Morck (Matthew Goode) and the psychiatrist Dr. Irving (Kelly MacDonald). I felt uncomfortable as the boundaries were non-existent and I would have preferred a platonic relationship or a super slow burn.

I am so happy to say that I completed ‘The Other Bennet Sister’! And I loved it! The episodes are only 30 minutes long and so charming that I just ate this up and watched it all in one sitting. Mary Bennet has always been rather dear to me and I love how this expanded on her character and allowed her to shine in such a beautiful way. The BBC is well versed in bringing the Regency world to life and the costumes and scenery were great.

Mary (Ella Bruccoleri) and Mr Hayward (Dónal Finn) have my whole heart and I’m so happy that there will be a Christmas special!

At some point I’m looking forward to reading Janice Hadlow’s novel.

Roll 1: Read a Book From a Genre you Dislike

Great Big Beautiful Life; Emily Henry

I don’t dislike any genre, because there’s always something that will surprise me, but I do steer away from contemporary romance/fiction.

I’ve chosen Great Big Beautiful Life as I’m intrigued more by the mystery of the plot and I’m hoping that plays a big part as well as the romance. I’m hoping that the little competition they have going on with finding out the history of this reclusive heiress will be really compelling.

Roll 2: Read a Controversial Book

China Dream; Ma Jian

The first book I thought of was China Dream (translated by Flora Drew) as the author Ma Jian’s works are banned in China. Ma Jian is outspoken in his criticism against the Communist Party and their reign of violence and greed which are strong themes of his works.

Roll 3: Read a Book From a Favourite Author

Devil in Spring; Lisa Kleypas

I am so excited for this book! I’m obsessed that we’re going to get St. Vincent’s son’s romance story. I need for him and Evie to have a cameo because they’re my favourite couple from The Hathaway series ❤️

Roll 4: Read a Literary Award Winner/Nominee

Prophet Song; Paul Lynch

This book won the Booker Prize Award in 2023 and I recently came across this in a charity shop! This is a dystopian novel that sounds like it will emotionally ruin me.

Roll 5: A Quick Read

Heartstopper, Volume 6; Alice Oseman

Silvia added some more cards to the game for it’s 2 year anniversary and I didn’t think I would get one of these so quickly!

Heartstopper came to an end in July and this will be a super quick read. This is a graphic novel series and I only really like to read volumes in one sitting.

TV Series

I’ve put ‘Yellowstone’ series one on again and I will finish it this month or I’m never speaking about it again… same with ‘The East Palace’.

‘Ludwig’ came back in August for it’s second series and I’m so excited to get into this! I really enjoyed the first series and I loved the pairing of David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin.

After finishing ‘Teach You a Lesson’ I thought I need to watch another Jin Ki Joo drama and ‘From Now On, Showtime!’ seems like it will be a lot of fun!
