Watching “I’m Not a Robot” is part of my Rom- Com Valentine’s Watchlist I made this February (see here β₯) and I’m so glad I’m back into Kdrama’s again, because this was so good!
I’m Not a Robot aired on MBC (Wednesday + Thursday slot) over the December of 2017 and the January of 2018. It ran for 32 (half hour) episodes.
This drama has two main plots: the romance and the chaebol antics.
Kim Min Kyu (Yoo Seung Ho) is the director of KM Financial, a company set up by his father. After the pair were killed in a car crash, the young boy began to lead an isolated and lonely life. He is both burdened by his grief, but also the illness of human contact that stemmed from the accident 15 years ago.
His company is not one of investment, instead it chooses to buy and sell companies for a profit. One such company includes the Santa Maria Team. In an effort to save themselves from being sold to a British company, they use the fact that he “owns” them and thus their work as a way to get him invested in their invention: Aji 3 – an advanced AI robot.
Seeing this as a way to get some form of “connection”, Min Kyu accepts the robot to test and brings the team onto his property. However, when the robot is broken, it’s chief creator Prof. Hong Baek Gyoon (Um Ki Joon) calls upon his ex Jo Ji A (Chae Soo Bin) to fill in for the robot until it’s fixed as he used her image for Aji 3’s design (I don’t want to admit to how long it took me to realise Aji was Ji A backwards…).
The antics between Min Kyu and “Aji 3” are instantly hilarious. Min Kyu has an IQ 159 and I was like where? The character of Min Kyu is multi-layered and through his budding friendship and feelings for “Aji 3” was fascinating to watch. It was both heartwarming to see how far he was coming in his illness and not even realising, but heartbreaking that he was falling in love with what he thought was a robot.
While we did have a love triangle, in that Beak Gyoon obviously still loved Ji A, it was the triangle between Min Kyu, Ji A and Aji 3 that was most captivating. It was definitely the romance that kept this drama being steady and enjoyable to watch. As well as the friendships formed between Min Kyu and the Santa Maria Team.
On the flip side, Ji A is an inventor and a people person. She stands her ground and doesn’t allow anyone to take advantage of the situation. Ji A’s home life is somewhat tense because her dreams are not a viable option according to her brother (Seo Dong Won as Jo Jin Bae). Her wish of getting a competition back up and running by KM Financial is the main reason she stays to begin with. We know that she is strong minded, but through her friendship with Min Kyu we start to truly understand that it’s her determination and kindness that makes you want her to succeed.
The dynamic between the two characters is fun, sweet, loving and momentarily devastating. The chemistry between Seung Ho and Soobin was wonderful, which is why close aged actors will always be superior together!
The chaebol antics were the KM Financial business aspect. At first this was brought in as very secondary. It popped up every now and again, and it wasn’t that interesting in my opinion. It picked up in the second half of the drama, although it did more to redeem a few characters and to repair the bonds between Min Kyu and the Santa Maria Team after the big betrayal than actually interest me on a business plot standpoint. Overall, that aspect could have been integrated better, but may have taken away from the romance and friendships, so I’m not too fussed.
With the business side it was interesting to see English and the English white actors so well integrated into a drama. Normally, I watch and I cringe, but this was done so well. Also, I will admit that the main reason I wanted Yoo Cheol (Kang Ki Young) – Min Kyu’s childhood friend and current CEO – to redeem himself was because he’s handsome and I like him and Ri El (Hwang Seung Un) as a potential couple. Chaebol power couple! Don’t judge me π

Other things I liked about this drama was that the conflict of Min Kyu finding out he was basically duped by the Santa Maria Team and Ji A wasn’t dragged out. We, the audience, weren’t unnecessarily put through unneeded angst. Don’t get me wrong, I cried. A lot. But we got to see Min Kyu actually living up to his IQ score, as well as Ji A’s determination and steadfast love.
I loved the Santa Maria Team! Every single member brought something to the drama. Baek Gyoon is incredibly smart, but clueless about romance. Pi (Park Se Wan) is the grounding force that keeps the team together. While, Hoktal (Song Jae Ryong) and Ssanip (Ko Gun Han) are the idiots that you can’t help but love! Nicely integrated is Ji A’s best friend – Sun Hye (Lee Minji) – who acts as a bridge to actual “reality” and she was often one of the main voices of reason.
The drama itself is well made and the effects with the robots and Aji 3 were actually a whole lot better than I was expecting! And beside the cool robot/ sciencey graphics, the editing was rather cute and funny when it needed to be.
While the plot is nothing to truly rave about on surface level. The aspects of the Beauty and the Beast retelling and the characters is what made this drama so enjoyable and memorable. This is definitely a new favourite and while I know I could go on and on about I’m Not a Robot – there are so many other characters and aspects I would love to highlight – but I have rambled enough π
