It’s time for another Save One Drop One and I went into this thinking I would just tell you which song I liked more. However, some songs aren’t very different in style and it’s definitely the MV and era concept/visuals that puts them in these categories.
I will be focusing on which concept I prefer the most – please note: my thoughts on the concept meaning might not be the same as yours – but I’ll also let you know which song I like the most. Although, I think it does mostly just turn into comparing MV’s… which is basically the same… right? ๐
This Save One Drop One come from SODO Smile and you can watch their video here.
You can play along as I’ve linked the MV’s on YouTube in the title of the songs. This is part one and the second part will be posted tomorrow~
PENTAGON – DR BEBE vs STRAY KIDS – THE VIEW
Pentagon have a dark and “mental health” (?) concept with Dr Bebe. I really love the dance portions and outfits! They look amazing. It all fits the passion and tone of the song. The vocals are great and the chorus is the best part. Side note: Hui with blue hair โฅ.โฅ
The View MV is pretty and cute, but there’s no dancing and that’s what I loved about Dr Bebe… but then again despite that, I enjoyed and focused more on Stray Kids video, so it looks like I’m starting this off with a win for the light!
Choosing a favourite song though was really hard, the more I listen to The View, the more I really like it, but I think the vocals in Dr Bebe are stronger and have more depth. But then again the genre is different. Even so, I’m going to choose Pentagon, but just know that this is my favourite Stray Kids song that I’ve listened to so far~
Dark: 0 || Light: 1
NATURE – ์ด๋ฆฐ์ (GIRLS) vs FROMIS_9 – FEEL GOOD (SECRET CODE)
Nature are giving us creepy, haunted, lesbian witchy vibes with Girls. I think the MV has pretty moments, but the way it’s put together is a little all over the place and I hate the dance portions (and choreo in general…). I think if they had just focused on the vibes I would have enjoyed it more and possibly have chosen it.
However, I love the concept of women just having a fun time and bright coloured dancing scenes in simple box sets – I blame SM lol~ And fromis_9 deliver in Feel Good! The outfits are so cute and fit the song. I also like the integration of social media and different filters/framing. It’s also a great message and I love this song so much! It makes me “feel so good” โฅ
Dark: 0 || Light: 2
BAP – ONE SHOT vs ONEUS – ์ฝ๊ฒ ์ฐ์ฌ์ง ๋ ธ๋ (A SONG WRITTEN EASILY)
I haven’t listened to One Shot in ages, but the nostalgia! This song came out in 2013! The concept is very much “we’re tough guys, we do crime, we’re going to get one of our own back and look cool doing it, but there’s drama and betrayal and guns!” The song and mv have a special place in my heart and the dance scenes are top tier, Zelo with his little moves – iconic.
My choice has to be Oneus though and the decision was not easy! Like I said, the nostalgia for One Shot was too real, but I know deep down that I do prefer the simpler concept – aka pretty men in nature – in A Song Written Easily. Sometimes simple is the best way to be. The song has a light quality to it, but is still fun and well sung. The outfits are pretty and so is the scenery they’re dancing in.
Dark: 0 || Light: 3
TXT – ์ธ๊ณ๊ฐ ๋ถํ๋ฒ๋ฆฐ ๋ฐค, ์ฐ๋ฆฐ… (CAN’T YOU SEE ME?) vs ATEEZ – WAVE
Do I just really like men in nature?! Because once again, I like the concept of Ateez’s wave more. It’s cute and fun, with bright vibrant colours and great dance portions. It’s about getting through the tough times together and being positive and is such a great message to put out.
I think TXT’s concept is about depression… question mark. I think it was done in an interesting way, but it lacked something and I’m not really sure what. I think it might be aspects of the imagery and outfits.
Suffice to say, men in nature won it for me. Plus, I do prefer Wave as a song in general.
Dark: 0 || Light: 4
PURPLE KISS – PONZONA vs WEKI MEKI – OOPSY
This was a no brainer for me! Purple Kiss gives sexy witch vibes in Ponzona and incorporates this style into the choreography and set so well! The vocals are amazing and they had an easy win over Weki Meki’s Oopsy, whose concept is a little bland.
I also love that Purple Kiss released this last year in March! Sexy dark vibes aren’t just for Halloween ๐
Dark: 1 || Light: 4
KANG DANIEL – PARANOIA vs WOODZ – BUMP BUMP
Paranoia is phenomenal! Kang Daniel’s music has been very hit or miss (mostly miss) for me, but I really like Paranoia. Plus the concept of nightmares, paranoia, feeling worthless are expressed in such a cool and artistic way that keeps your attention.
The concept of Bump Bump is letting the person you’re dating know that despite the hardships you love them. The MV is cute, but it’s a bit too chaotic for me. I think it doesn’t help that I don’t really like the song… And put against Kang Daniel’s Paranoia, Woodz didn’t really stand a chance.
Dark 2 || Light: 4
VIXX – ์ ์ฃผ์ธํ (VOODOO DOLL) vs N.FLYING – ์ ์ง์ง์. (OH REALLY.)
Another nostalgic moment for me! I even own this album and VIXX aren’t known as concept-dol’s for no reason. In Voodoo Doll, they are being experimented on by a woman using a voodoo doll. The story is that they have a one sided love and are prepared to suffer like a voodoo doll does to fulfil the girl’s wants. It’s so cool and portrayed so perfectly by VIXX. These men are so talented โฅ
N.Flying’s concept is about wanting to speak sincerely instead of pretending. It’s done in a playful manner, but it’s still very relatable. I do prefer this song, but concept wise VIXX has to win. There’s no question about that!
Dark: 3 || Light: 4
DREAMCATCHER – CHASE ME vs GFRIEND – ์ค๋๋ถํฐ ์ฐ๋ฆฌ๋ ME GUSTA TU
Dreamcatcher do creepy concepts so well. In Chase Me they are giving dangerous and mischievous ghosts in this mv, which has scenes reminiscent of The Shining. They are happy to make this man suffer and string him along for a long as possible. Love that for them~
On the other hand, Gfriend are the embodiment of the cute concept in Me Gustas Tu. They’re girls who are happy to be experiencing a crush and wanting to confess. It’s all very cute, but definitely boring in comparison.
I also prefer the song Chase Me by Dreamcatcher.
Dark: 4 || Light: 4
E’LAST – ์ ์ฐ (DARK DREAM) vs CRAVITY – CLOUD 9
E’LAST’s concept in Dark Dream is being stuck in the past and wanting their relationship to continue. I liked the use of red rope and the little lift looking box to signify being trapped. I also liked the colour scheme of the red and black, as well as the red and white. Overall, it’s an okay concept, but the delivery is a little lacklustre. I kind of wish the opening verse was the tone of the whole song as I think that would have been cooler.
On the other hand, Cravity are adorable with Cloud 9. It has a fresh, youthful concept about love.
This is hard because Cravity’s concept is a little generic, while E’LAST’s wasn’t used to it’s full potential. But I think E’LAST wins for me as it’s more interesting. I also prefer their song.
Dark: 5 || Light: 4
ENHYPEN – DRUNK-DAZED vs IKON – ์ฌ๋์ ํ๋ค (LOVE SCENARIO)
Enhypen’s concept is giving feelings of turbulence and uncertainty with the future and being trapped and controlled – with vampires and other supernatural imagery driving the visual narrative. It’s really cool and plays into the world/theory they’re creating with their music videos. The song is also really good.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t exactly put Love Scenario by iKON in the light category… the lyrics are a bit sad as they’re sad about a breakup. I will say that I wanted to choose this outright, simply because I love the song! Singing along to Hanbin and Bobby in Love Scenario is one of my favourite things to do ๐ However, Enhypen win me over with the supernatural concept โฅ
Dark: 6 || Light: 4
PIXY – WINGS vs VIVIZ – BOP BOP!
Pixy is giving me “unhinged” with Wings… I get the impression that it plays into their overall group concept which is cool, but I feel like I’m missing needed elements. The song is well sung and I think the choreography is great, those were my favourite parts of the mv. I think they missed the potential this has to showcase the concept of them finding their wings and the turmoil they’re going through in a more artistic way.
VIVIZ – made up of former GFriend members Eunha, Umji and SinB – debuted in February of this year and honestly, at first I didn’t like the song. However, I’ve listened to it so many times for this post that it’s grown on me! To me the concept seems to be about loving yourself and going to the beat of the music you create. It seems like the members are inside a person and creating a fun and confident atmosphere for them and thus for us too.
Surprisingly, I’m going to go with VIVIZ Bop Bop as the winner of this round!
Dark: 6 || Light: 5
ATEEZ – WONDERLAND vs EXO – LOVE ME RIGHT
Ateez are powerful and determined in Wonderland. Pushing forward the idea that you need to persevere and strive for what you want. This concept is shown with strong choreography and cool artsy shots/colours. They also incorporate some of their group concept into the mv.
EXO’s Love Me Right is about loving to the fullest and has a more artistic feel to it that’s a style we’ve seen from SM before (parts of the MV even remind me of f(x) 4 walls). I really do love this song, – it’s super catchy and EXO are one of my favourite groups, however, Ateez has a much more structured and compelling concept.
Dark: 7 || Light: 5
(G)I-DLE – OH MY GOD vs OH MY GIRL – NONSTOP (์ด์ง ์ค๋ ์ด)
Oh My God has one of those concepts that I think I’m just too dumb to understand. To me it evokes the thin fragile line between love and obsession. This matches with the different imagery and colour scheme throughout the mv, but I know I’m probably wrong! Still, it’s a great song by (G)I-DLE.
On the other hand Oh My Girl are expressing their confusion over them having feelings for their friend. It’s done in such a cute way with lots of graphics and the “friend” is embodied in a little teddy bear which is cute. The different scenarios and landscape really make you feel like you’re in the mind of a girl in love. I also love the mix of genres of the song itself โฅ
Dark: 7 || Light: 6
Being half way through, I’m surprised that the score is so tight!
I assumed that I would prefer a lot more of the “dark” concepts/visuals, but apparently I’m very fussy with those and have become a lot more receptive to the cuter/brighter kpop genre.
I’ll tally the full score in part two, so I’ll see you there!
Do we have similar tastes? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Thanks for reading!
I hope you’re having a lovely day and staying safe โฅ
