As always, I would like to start this post with some resources about some of the injustices this world is currently facing:
- https://abolish-ice.carrd.co/ There are still children and adults in cages in America. The same kind of thing is happening in China to the Uighur Muslims.
- https://lgbtqpl.carrd.co/ the safety of the LGBTQ+ community is threated by it’s own government leader.
- I find Twitter and extremely useful tool in finding information about these injustices and ways to help.
Jay G is the creator on this tag over on YouTube. You can watch their video here~
This is an old tag, however, it looked fun to do and I enjoyed the questions ♥
1. January (GARNET)
Associated with warding off negative forces and dark energies – Name a book with the darkest/evilest character you can think of.
Weirdly, this was harder than I expected. To be fair, I couldn’t really think of many evil characters… maybe I’m not reading the right urban/high fantasy, but then again I’m more focused on the “good” guys and the romance 💁♀️
The one that is obvious to me is Sauron. However, my brain thought of Prince Emory from Damsel; Elana K. Arnold. This man is despicable. He is abusive – physically, sexually and emotionally – to the main character and the servants around him. He wants for nothing and controls others with threats and treats people as his property.
2. February (AMETHYST)
Purple is associated with royalty – Name a book with regal qualities… You can base this off of characters or choose the King of all books
I didn’t know this. You may bow down to me now 😂👑
Anyway, regal qualities? Compassionate, upright, virtuous, tolerant, honourable etc. Can a book have these qualities? Or am I dumb and reading the question wrong? That’s always a possibility!
I’m just going to name a book with my favourite royals lol: Elantris; Brandon Sanderson! Sarene and Raoden had fantastic leadership qualities. Sarene was steadfast in her beliefs and fought for what was right, meanwhile Raoden was compassionate and thoughtful of the struggles of those around him. I loved them both!
3. March (AQUAMARINE)
Washed out – Name a ‘wishy washy’ character, a character who is not strong or a follower
Harry Potter has an abundance, but I feel uncomfortable promoting this series now. So not that.
The other character that quickly came to mind is Arthur Dent from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy; Douglas Adams. This man spent most of the time being useless and just following along – grudgingly – on the adventures of his “rescuers”. He had his moments, don’t get me wrong, but his character was pretty wishy washy and annoying 😂
4. April (DIAMOND)
A diamond in the rough – Name a book that you loved but is not well known
I always struggle with these. Just because I don’t see people reading them, doesn’t mean they aren’t well known. I went through Goodreads and looked at the books I haven’t seen on YouTube or book twitter. The ones I found had at least 50,000 ratings which is a lot… right?
And then I looked at Birth of a Killer; Darren Shan. This is the first book in the Larten Crepsley quartet and it only has 6,170 ratings, with just 402 reviews. I love these books! It’s a prequel to The Saga of Darren Shan – which has 12 books – so I understand the lack of ratings, but it’s worth it!
5. May (EMERALD)
Said to balance energy – Name two characters who balance each other well
Howl and Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. This may be cheating because I don’t mean the original by Diana Wynne Jones and I know Hayao Miyazaki’s version is a film… but! I have the film in a manga format so… I’m going with that!
In Miyazaki’s version, the relationship between Howl and Sophie is more special in my opinion. Howl is spontaneous and selfish, while Sophie is diligent and often selfless. Howl shows Sophie a more carefree attitude and Sophie teaches Howl the importance of family. They balance each other so well and I love them with my whole heart ♥
6. June (PEARL)
Associated with loyalty – Name a character who is loyal to the end
Pauline from The Kiss of Deception; Mary E. Pearson. She helped Lia escape from the palace and shared her new life in a small village even though she could have been killed or punished for helping. Throughout the trilogy Pauline always stayed true to Lia and believed in her. They were best friends and I love them so much. Pauline also deserves every happiness and I was willing to murder someone if anything happened to her 😂
7. July (RUBY)
Blood red – Name a book that made your blood boil, one that made you angry
Angry? I don’t think a book has ever made me angry… annoyed? Sure. But angry is reaching.
Maybe The High Lord? It’s the 3rd book in the Black Magician’s Trilogy; Trudi Canavan. I’ve moaned about this before, and I will probably moan about until I die. A character death occurs maybe less than 20 pages from the end. I was so upset and annoyed that I immediately put it down. For about 2 weeks after if I just looked at the book I got weepy/frustrated 😂
8. August (PERIDOT)
Pale green (it pales in comparison to other gems) – Name a supporting character who you like better than the main character
So, I’m going to do this a different way:
The main character is Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments; Cassandra Clare and the supporting character I like better than her are all of them 😂 but mostly Magnus.
9. September (SAPPHIRE)
Blue like the ocean which is calming – Name a book that had a calming affect on you
I don’t read the right genre’s to ever feel calmed by a book…
10. October (OPAL)
Iridescent – Name an iridescent book, this can be a book with a beautiful cover or you can base it off of a character
The Hush Hush series; Becca Fitzpatrick have very shiny dust jackets! The plot may be meh and Silence may be a bit too red, but the others are actually very pretty!
11. November (TOPAZ)
Associated with resilience – Name a book with a character who rises to the top in a time of adversity
I’m not really sure how to answer this one… I’m staring at my shelves not really knowing if “the top” applies to them or even what that means…
I guess Jane Eyre; Charlotte Brontë. This poor girl goes through so much right from childhood into adulthood. Yet Jane remains a loving, independent person and eventually gets to have the happiness she deserves ♥
12. December (BLUE ZIRCON)
Associated with friendship – Name a book with a friendship you want to be a part of
I feel weird choosing a children’s or YA friendship group considering I’m 25. But, if I were aged down then the friendship group from Heartstopper; Alice Oseman is great and so loving.
I would also say Lizzie and Charlotte’s friendship from Pride & Prejudice; Jane Austen. However, at this point I’m basically Charlotte. So, any Mr Collins’ out there, hit me up! 😂
What are some of your answers? Did you like you’re birthstone question? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading! I hope you’re having a lovely day and staying safe ♥
