It’s Wednesday and I’m here with WINNER!
I say WINNER only because this is how it is titled on their official YT page, however, this song was sung, penned and the MV stars Nam TaeHyun, whose voice is beautiful โฅ
Story:
I’ve seen that this song was written about how TaeHyun felt after a break up, therefore I’m pretty certain that the song is about how they are no longer together, but TaeHyun still has feelings and has to come to terms with her not loving him anymore.
Thinking this, the MV isn’t far off that mark, although some things were a little strange (but more on that later). TaeHyun was dating a French woman, however, what seems like music and alcohol got in the way of their relationship. However, TaeHyun wants to start again with her and we see different stages of their life, showing different emotions, merged with the awkward table setting of the present.
After the woman storms into her room, TaeHyun follows and the pair embrace, the woman giving in to her emotions. BUT! A man starts to come up the stairs and into the apartment. I thought they were going to get caught, but TaeHyun is hidden inside the closet and even though at one point the man gets suspicious, I don’t think he discovers him…
What is revealed though, is that the woman looks to be pregnant! We then see his car drive away, as he has been forced to face reality head on now.
Looking at the lyrics (which you can seeย here) it’s pretty much about trying to face the reality that the other person doesn’t love you anymore. That even though your mind is fully aware, your heart just can’t let go, even if you want it to.
Visuals:
I thought this MV was so beautiful and not just because TaeHyun looks like Draco Malfoy/a rich ahjumma (haha :p).ย
Mainly I thought that the colours were really well used within this MV. There was a clear distinction between the past and present and the change in colours within the past memories was rather indicative of the feelings/status of the relationship.
I thought it was quite interesting and different that French was used in this MV and not the generic English that I’m sure a lot of other companies would have gone for in this situation. I like the subtitles, although them being yellow was a little odd to me… that’s just me though haha.
My favourite part was when she told him his hair’s still stupid! When I saw this on Tumblr/Twitter I thought it was an edit and not actually in the MV! It was both a shock and hilarious! And thinking of the Nam-Diva face to this comment brings me endless happiness haha ^^”
The things I weren’t too sure on were the relevance of some of the memories. The part where the woman is holding a party and he is just gloomily drinking on the stairs… I don’t quite understand. Was that supposed to represent that he didn’t fit into her life? Or that he wasn’t making an effort anymore?
I also didn’t quite understand the symbolic nature of him dropping the ring and the glass of water spilling over… was this supposed to represent that the action of him dropping the ring (which is important) and then picking it up representative of what he wants to do with the relationship? And the water is tears?… ^^” haha
Also, for the most part I don’t like videos that have the two thick black bars on the top and bottom of the screen… Did YG spend all the budget on all the white people? This is just my preference and I guess it could be argued that it gives it more of an ‘atmosphere’, but I feel it would have been as emotive without the black strips of doom.
Vocals:
I don’t really much to say here, just that fact that I loved every single aspect of TaeHyun’s voice and that I am so happy that once again he has gotten a solo song. It’s so soft and emotional throughout all of this song that I can feel the heartache in his voice which makes the song so much more powerful.
I could listen to this song on repeat (without the random French thrown…) and it would not get annoying or devalue the song in my mind at all.
And it makes me even more excited to listen to the rest of this album~
