I enjoyed doing one sentence reviews last month, so I’ve decided to do it again for the books I read in May!

All the titles are linked to their Goodreads page, so you can check out their synopsis if you aren’t familiar with the plots or want more information on them.

Skulduggery Pleasant Grimoire; Derek Landy

A good recap of all the books with some cool mixed media elements – kind of makes some of the newer books sound good lol

🌸🌸🌸

Nettle and Bone; T. Kingfisher

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A fun “dark” fairytale exploring sisterly love, found families and how the strength to save ourselves and other women is within us and within the relationships we make.

🌸🌸🌸

The Madness of Grief; Rev. Richard Coles

A heartbreaking and heartwarming insight into an incredibly difficult time – death, loss and grief – from the perspective of a clergyman.

🌸🌸🌸

Slippery Creatures; K.J. Charles

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A (loveable) Great War veteran, just trying to live his life in a post-war Britain that has no place for him, finds himself at the centre of a fun, action packed conspiracy and mystery, that goes in unexpected directions!

🌸🌸🌸

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Volume 1; Mo Xiang Ting Xui

rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

A resurrected (and dramatic af) man solves fascinating mysteries alongside his stoic “enemy” in a wuxia world where magic and demons are par for the course.

🌸🌸🌸

The God Desire; David Baddiel

A concise and interesting insight into Baddiel’s form of atheism that is intrinsically linked to his Jewish identity and relationship with, and thoughts on, death.

🌸🌸🌸

Piranesi; Susanna Clarke

rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

A super sweet man, who loves and cares for his world, discovers that his own identity is a mystery and that the life he’s built is all a lie – pretty prose, but could have been further developed.

side note: why did I think the main character – Piranesi – was the satyr on the front cover?! I literally knew nothing about this book other than so many people have read it lol

🌸🌸🌸

Something Fabulous; Alexis Hall

rating: ⭐⭐⭐.75

A fun, wild and queer ride through the countryside of England where a highly strung Regency Lord discovers his true self with the “help” (aka exasperating circumstances) of a set of dramatic and flamboyant twins.

🌸🌸🌸

Medusa; Jessie Burton

rating: ⭐⭐⭐

A alternative retelling, putting Medusa’s tragedy front and centre where it belongs, told through some pretty prose, although a bit too modern and distracting in some places (Perseus and Medusa saying words like mum and girlfriend seemed odd to me 😂).
