Debuts || Comebacks || Releases || OST’s
- https://getinformed.carrd.co/ This is an incredible carrd with information and resources about many of the issues the world is going through right now!
- I find Twitter an extremely useful tool in finding information about these injustices and ways to help.
It’s nearly the end of February, so I was umming and ahing over whether I should still post these. I ultimately decided, yeah why not! Which is obvious if you’re reading this. I’ve done it a little differently this time, splitting them up into manageable and shorter posts. I’ll be doing the same for February. My goal for March is to make these posts during the month, so once a week.
I’d also like to apologise in advance – I’m not musical and I don’t know how to eloquently describe and use music related terminology. These posts are purely to show what music was released and what I liked, and hopefully you can find some new faves as well ♥
Dalsooobin – 눈 닮은 눈 (Eyes Like Snow)
Subin or Dalsooobin is a member of girl group Dal Shabet (who debuted in 2011). She is a singer/songwriter and made her solo debut in 2016.
While I think that the opening is slightly weak and the tempo of the vocals doesn’t match the music, it’s hard to deny that Su Bin’s voice is incredible. The emotion in her words is palpable and as the song progresses it gets stronger. Overall, it’s such a pretty song and I highly recommend checking Su Bin out ♥
Woo! Ah! – I Don’t Miss U
Woo!ah! is a 5 membered (originally 6) girl group under NV Entertainment. The group debuted in May of last year. I Don’t Miss U is Woo!ah!’s 2nd single.
Well, I’ve found another girl group to be a fan of! This song starts out strong, and the vocals are not only really good, but also versatile. They don’t have the usual range I associate with a girl group (or at least with the same sort of style and size). This song is really fun, upbeat and catchy. There isn’t a boring or bad part anywhere! The video is also really cute and it looks like the members are having a good time ♥
WJSN SeolA – At the end of the day (하루 끝)
SeolA is a member of the Korean-Chinese girl group WJSN (aka Cosmic Girls) which debuted in 2016. At the end of the day is an OST for the drama Growing Season which finished airing January 15th.
I don’t have much to say about this song, other than it’s beautiful. SeolA has a very good voice – she is the lead vocalist in her group – and if you are a fan of ballads you should 100% listen to At the end of the day! I’m definitely going to be looking into WJSN.
Park Pil Kyu – 스며든다 Pervade
I couldn’t find any information on Park Pil Kyu, but I believe he was on Superstar K3 (2011), and this is the only song of his I could find. This may be his official debut single. If you know more let me know in the comments!
I am trash for male ballad singers and I will, for sure, be listening to this man in the future! Park Pil Kyu has a beautiful voice. It’s very calming and Pervade has a gentle sweetness to it amid the emotion. The video is pretty and I saw in the comments saying that this song would fit as an OST and I definitely agree! I look forward to hearing what he does in the future ♥
LeeZe – We don’t love you anymore (우린 사랑하지 않아)
LeeZe participated on both Superstar K4 and The Voice Korea 2020. She has a YouTube channel – LeeZe Official – where she uploads covers of popular ballads. I subscribed immediately when I discovered that piece of information! ♥ We don’t love you anymore is her first release.
This song instantly captivated me. Lee Ze’s vocals are stunning and incredibly emotive. There is also a soothing quality to her tone and while the music felt a little loud in places, her voice is never truly drowned out and remains strong throughout.
Woody – 그냥 집에 있자 Just stay at home
Woody debuted in boy group N-Train (2011), but went solo after their disbandment in 2013. He is signed to Indian Label. In 2019, there was some controversy as he topped the charts with his song “Fire Up”. He was accused by netizens of chart manipulation, but no evidence was ever found. By the way I listened to that song and it’s really good. Netizens really be out here thinking that indie music isn’t popular.
Just stay at home is so chill and calming! The concept for the music video is pretty cute and funny, but also relatable. The song feels relevant to our lives right now and also has a feel good vibe to it. I highly recommend ♥
Seo Gi – Gullible (팔랑귀) + Go Back (그 때)
Seo Gi is another artist who I couldn’t find much about. On Spotify she has a single from August 2020 and then these two singles of this year. Again, if you have any information, let me know in the comments!
Both Gullible and Go Back have a chill vibe. The vocals are really pretty, sweet and strong. I’m excited to see her bring out more music! I prefer Gullible, which is why I chose that video, but you can check out Go Back’s MV here~
Im Se Jun – The love we had (널 사랑했던 날들)
Weirdly, I couldn’t find information on Im Se Jun. What I could find is that he is signed to MAJOR9, but they don’t have him listed on their website… and they haven’t updated his playlist on Youtube since 2019… Even so, Im Se Jun from YouTube I could see that he has been active on programmes such as Immortal Songs 2 (normally alongside Ben) and Masked Singer. If you have any more info, let me know~
This month has been delivering great ballads so far. Im Se Jun has a beautiful voice and the song is pretty. The vocals are really what shines, while bolstered by the accompaniment.
Baek Z Young – My Light
Baek Ji Young debuted in 1999 and has since released 8 albums. Last year she was a main mentor for the reality show Miss Back. My Light is an OST for the JTBC drama Run On, which finished airing on February 4th.
Baek Z Young is such a powerful vocalist! This song perfectly fits the top tier OST checklist – stunning vocals and ram-packed with emotion!
Lim Ji Soo – Monologue
I couldn’t find much information on Lim Ji Soo, but she uploads frequently to her YouTube channel – LIMJISOO 임지수.
I hadn’t heard this artist before and I was not expecting this voice! Lim Ji Soo has such an interesting voice, it is rather androgynous and it’s wonderful. Her voice is very calming and beautiful in Monologue. I highly recommend you give this song a listen!
Jung Joonil ft. SOLE – First Love
Jung Joon Il is the keyboardist and main vocal of indie band Mate (debuted 2009), while SOLE is a female singer who made her solo debut in 2017.
This song is so pretty! The instrumental music behind is lovely and compliments SOLE’s voice – who gives me Disney princess vibes – and it’s so nice listening to her sing. I’ll definitely be listening to more of her work. This song doesn’t feature Jung Joon Il’s vocals, but he has a really nice voice too! He did a live of Hug Me for Dingo Music that I highly recommend ♥
BIG INNER – One Day
I tried to find information on this group, but it’s hard to come by. From their YouTube channel I found the groups Instagram account and they each have their own. There are 3 members, but only two sing on One Day – Kim Dong Hyun and Park Eun Pyung (the other member is Lee Kwang Eun). This song is from their 1st mini album.
This song and duet are giving me male Davichi vibes and I LOVE IT!!! You have the two elements of a soft and deeper vocal which really elevates this ballad. These two men sound amazing, and make a powerful combo.
Jeong Sewoon – In The Dark
Jeong Se Woon has been active from 2013-17 in reality such as K-Pop Star S3 and Produce 101 S2 (representing his agency Starship Entertainment). Se Woon officially debuted as a solo artist in August 2017. In The Dark is from his album 24 Part 2 (the previous part was released in July of last year).
I hadn’t heard of this artist, but that is definitely changing. From the get go I was immediately hooked! Se Woon’s voice is so smooth and flows incredibly with the music. In the Dark has the mix of beautiful vocals – that border on ballad – and an upbeat tempo, with a faster chorus. It’s an amazing song, it’s definitely one of my favourites and I’m excited to check out his previous stuff and keep up with what he’s going to release in the future ♥
Why Don’t We ft. AB6IX – Fallin’ (Adrenaline) (remix)
I thought this was going to be a remix of a Korean song and that I was probably going to hate it… but it’s a remix of an English song and by remix, it’s incorporating Korean and I think that’s amazing! This is the kind of collaboration with a Western artist that I’m looking for. It doesn’t sound generic or as though it’s specifically pandering to mostly a Western audience. I LOVE it!
Why Don’t We are a five membered American boy band who debuted in 2016. AB6IX debuted as a 5 member boy group under Brand New Music in 2019, but has since become a 4 member unit.
The song is great, the beat, the style, the pace and the Korean inclusion is rather big, but it isn’t jarring when the actual original group sing. It’s very well mixed and balanced. I also haven’t listened to either group. I literally had never heard of Why Don’t We, but I’m really happy to have discovered them. AB6IX have fantastic vocals (the rap was great!) and Why Don’t We are right up my alley!
IGWI – 그때의 너, 지금의 나 (You at the time, me at this moment)
IGWI is the stage name for female singer Lee Ju Rin. She is currently under the agency Beyond Love. I couldn’t find any information about her, including when she actually debuted. If you have any insight, let me know in the comments!
IGWI has a beautiful voice, that has a sweet undertone. This ballad is really pretty, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but it felt like it had several feels to it. There was ballad, rnb and country. Overall, this makes for a very calming and interesting song!
BOYHOOD – 대저택 (Luxury Big House)
BOYHOOD is the stage name of Nam Dong Hyun, an independent artist (which I believe means he isn’t under an agency). Dong Hyun was a former member of group South Club and appeared as a contestant on Produce X 101. He made his solo debut in July of last year, but has been active since 2017.
Luxury Big House was self made (in every aspect) and it really shows off a lot of talent! The music is fun, but still has a cool and controlled feel. The mix of vocal techniques also adds another layer of range. The song has a chill vibe, but with playfulness undertones. I look forward to seeing what Dong Hyun does next!
Lovelyz Ryu Su Jeong – Colour Rush
Ryu Su Jeong is the lead vocalist of girl group Lovelyz, who debuted in 2014 under Woolim Entertainment. Su Jeong made her solo debut last year with mini album Tiger Eyes.
Colour Rush is the main OST for the bl web drama of the same name which aired (for the most part) in January. For my thoughts on this drama you can check out this post here ♥
Every time this song came on during the drama I wished it wouldn’t end. I’m not overly familiar with Lovelyz, but I definitely need to check them out because Ryu Su Jeong’s voice is stunning! This ballad is beautiful and fits so well into the drama. I would recommend checking both the song and drama out ♥
If you click the song titles below a tab will open up to the video on YouTube~
- 3rd January: Baekhyun – Get You Alone. While, I tend to only talk about Korean music, this song is part of Baekhyun’s (EXO) debut Japanese solo mini album and its fantastic! You should really do yourself a favour and listen to it! Baekhyun’s voice is perfect and the title track is stylish and fun! ♥
- 5th January – Eun Ki – ON&ON. I quite like the vocals and elements of the beat, but the music is a bit too much. It’s also pretty loud over the vocals. I will be checking out his other songs~
- 7th January: ISU (MC the Max) – Your Lights. This is an OST for a web drama and it’s a nice ballad. The only reason it’s in this section is because Lee Soo’s vocal’s took a while for me to warm up to because there is an element of strain in his voice. The music video is also really pretty~
