Musical Theatre || Book Tag

  • This is an incredible carrd with information and resources about many of the issues the world is going through right now!
  • I find Twitter an extremely useful tool in finding information about these injustices and ways to help. As well as for petitions!

I grew up watching and listening to musicals. I have only seen two musicals in a theatre – The Lion King and The Addams Family. I would love to see more, but let’s not lie the experience is expensive (I’ve seen my fair share of Panto though πŸ˜‚).

Each song prompt is linked to a version of the song, I tried to find official’s for all on YouTube, but only some are.

This tag was created by Maddie at book browsing blog. I had fun making this, so let’s get right into the questions!

Satisfied: What book had an unsatisfying ending or needs a sequel?

I tend to be okay with most endings. One I can think of that I read recently was The Lady Rogue; Jenn Bennett. It’s not a bad book, but the ending was kind of disappointing. It’s a fun romp and I was hoping for a more impactful “showdown” and ending. I would be interested in a sequel though~

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie: What is a really hyped book you want to read only because of the hype?

I’m normally late to the party, so I’m always missing the hype train. I will say I still want to read The Cruel Prince; Holly Black. This is still being talked about despite the trilogy being complete. I’m not so sure what the book is about, but I own it πŸ˜‚

I know the picture below isn’t the version in the link, but I just wanted to show how beautiful and precious Jo Kwon looks β™₯

Journey to the Past: Name a book that features flashbacks or developed backstories.

I literally can’t think of any book that features flashbacks, so we’re going with the developed backstories! For this, I’m going to go with Phase 1 Skulduggery Pleasant; Derek Landy. In the 10 books, we learn so much about our characters and their pasts. We’ve learnt about Skulduggery, the other Dead Men and China, among others. This knowledge is also naturally and organically learnt throughout the series.

Michael in the Bathroom: If you were escaping a party by hiding in a bathroom, what book would you take with you?

I always have my phone on me and would definitely be using it to escape from a situation I don’t like. On my phone I have the library app Overdrive and the book I currently have and am reading is Unravel the Dusk; Elizabeth Lim.

This might be a very literal answer, but we’re going with it πŸ˜‚

Ex-Wives: Name a book that is a twist or retelling of a well known story.

Keeping in line with the Tudor theme: My Lady Jane; Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton + Jodi Meadows. This is a fun, magical and a lot happier retelling of the reign of Edward and the 9 day Queen, Lady Jane Grey.

Still Hurting: What book hurt you and has stuck with you ever since?

Do I even need to explain: The High Lord; Trudi Canavan? πŸ˜‚

I moan about this book all the time on here! This book hurt me years and years ago and I have still refused to read the subsequent 10ish pages (I read the last page) and I will never continue with the next trilogy. That character death did not need to happen and I will die on that hill!

Me and the Sky: Pick a book that features your dream job, real or fantastical.

This is where I cry about how I don’t know what I want to be in real life, let alone in fiction 😭

I’m scanning my books and honestly, these characters don’t have great jobs or ones that would be fun for me to do. They’re all way too active for me πŸ˜‚

The one that is most desirable is from Howl’s Moving Castle: opening a flower shop and marrying Howl. I relate to Sophie and want the same magical happy ending (the Hayao Miyazaki version rather than the Diana Wynne Jones original).

Santa Fe: What fictional place would you love to visit?

We love books here and the Austermeer Great Libraries in Sorcery of Thorns; Margaret Rogerson sounded so cool and interesting to wander around. I’d happily have any of the three main characters give me a tour, especially Silas β™₯

When He Sees Me: What book did you fall in love with the second you saw the cover?

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin; Roseanne Brown!

I fell in love with this cover instantly! Green is my favourite colour and the dark tone with the gold accents is so pretty. Not to mention how the model – Tania Toussaint – on the cover is stunning and I love the light green of outfit!

This book is also very good and I would highly recommend it if you’re a fan of fantasy and compelling characters.

Disappear: Hype an underrated backlist book.

A backlist book is a book that was published more than a year ago (for more info check out this source).

I’m never good at these… So, I’m just going to showcase The Darkest Powers trilogy; Kelley Armstrong. This series was published in 2008 and is about a group of teens finding out their powers and escaping from the grips of an organisation who wants to test them.

The main cast are well rounded and the plot is well done, fast paced and compelling. I’ve read it several times and I still really enjoy it β™₯

What You Want: What do you want to see more of in books?

It’s not that I want to see more of anything in books, it’s that I know that I don’t read as widely as I should. This is why I’m trying to widen my reading through Own Voices and diverse fiction.

BONUS: Pick your favourite musical and recommend a book that reminds you of it!

So, my favourite musical is Evita! I can’t think of any book that really makes me think of this musical or real life story.

If you have nay recommendations, let me know! I would love an Eva Peron character rising through the ranks of power, discarding men and becoming a treasured woman by the people (I know there was a lot of frustration and upheavel at the time as well).

What’s your favourite musical? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for reading! I hope you’re having a lovely day & staying safe β™₯
