Whose up for a little book tag?
Miranda Reads (who no longer has any content on YouTube that I could find) created this tag. I saw this on Jenniely’sย ย blog and I thought it would be a pretty fun tag to do ๐
QUESTIONS
1. Actions speak louder than words.
A book that wasn’t or couldn’t be better than the movie.
Cirque du Freak was AWFUL! When I was younger Darren Shan was my favourite author and I still think I’ve read more of his books than any other author. So I was excited when the first book in the Darren Shan Saga was being turned into a film.
It was rubbish. So bad. It didn’t even follow the plot properly or in a way that would make sense or at least respect the book.
2. The grass is always green on the other side.
A rags to riches…or riches to rags story.
Hunted by Meagan Spooner is a Beauty and the Beast retelling which I really enjoyed and at the beginning of the book Yeva’s family lose their money due to a bad business venture. For Yeva it’s more of a relief than a hindrance to her enjoyment of life.
Oh and of course Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses does well for herself and her sisters who are in poverty before the Fae get involved in her life.
3. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
A parent-child relationship you loved.
Melissa and Desmond Edgley are honestly the best parents ever! I love them so much! They are such dorks and support Val in everything she does. Their family dynamic is absolutely beautiful โฅ
4. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
A great book that NEEDS a better cover.
The Host by Stephanie Meyer is aย good book and no one gives it a chance. One because people think they’re better for not liking Meyer and two because the cover sucks. It’s ugly and doesn’t entice you to read it.
I think this suffers from the whole face epidemic on book covers that happened a few years ago and deserves a new cover. And the film cover doesn’t count.
5. You can’t please everyone.
A book you hate/love that everyone loves/hates.
I don’t like some much loved children’s classics. I didn’t enjoy Jim Barrie’s Peter Pan and I can’t stand Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. And some of the later books in C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia were a let down.
I can’t actually think of anything else. I guess Fellowship of the Ring which was coma inducing and loads of people love that. But then I loved the next two books in the trilogy.ย (I hate The Hobbit).
In YA fantasy, which is my most read genre, I tend to like what everyone else does haha ๐
6. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
A book you are a better person for having read.
The ones that come to mind are:
- A Monster Calls; Patrick Ness
This book’s theme is loss and coming to terms with the inevitable and the death of a close one. It was one of the things that helped me through my own grieving process.
- The Hate U Give; Angie Thomas
I don’t tend to read contemporaries, especially hard hitting ones. I want my fiction to be an escape. However, this owned voices book is very important.
7. Love is blind.
A book with a disabled character OR actual blind love.
Of course the first book that comes to mind is Six of Crows (Leigh Bardugo) where we have a character who has a limp and uses a cane, and another who is dyslexic.
Percy from Mackenzi Lee’s Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is epileptic which was wonderful for me to see!
8. Ignorance is bliss.
A book you know is bad but don’t want to admit it or a book you don’t want to read in case it’s bad.
This is hard for me because if I really like a book, I have trouble reading the next book because I get anxious that I”l be let down haha ๐
9. There is no time like the present.
Your favorite contemporary book.
As I’ve said I don’t really read contemporaries, so I only really have a handful to choose to from.
The ones I really like:
- The Ladybirds series; Jenny McLachlan – is such a cute and fluffy series about girls following their passions.
- The Hate U Give; Angie Thomas – This is an owned voice insight into the police brutality against African Americans.
- The Kiss Quotient; Helen Hoang – An autistic woman hires a male escort to teach her about her perceived ineptitude about love and sex.
10. Better safe than sorry.
A book you don’t want to read in case it’s bad or vice versa!
Sarah J. Maas is ab author I do enjoy, but I’ve never been inclined to read her Throne of Glass series. I just have a feeling that I’m going to hate it haha
I’ve also seen everyone hype and love To All the Boys I Loved Before, I mean it has a Netflix film, but I know that I’m not going to like it. So there’s no point wasting my time.
Thanks for reading! I hope you’re having a lovely day~
I am with you on the hobbit! Couldn’t get through it.
