✨2023✨
Remember to stay up to date with the world, listen to those facing atrocities and help spread awareness/donate where you’re able to.
The Goodreads Choice Awards 2023 is upon us! And I thought it would be fun for next year, to read all the books in the Best Fantasy category and do my own voting/ranking at the end. For several years now, Emily from BookswithEmilyFox has done this and I really enjoy her content, so thought it would be fun to try as well.
I’ve chosen Fantasy as this is a genre I love, but haven’t really picked up a ton of this year.
For the Goodreads Choice Awards in general, I will not be voting as out of 15 categories, with 20 books in each, I have only read 2 nominees… One of them is Yellowface by R.F. Kuang and while the rating isn’t the best, I do think Rebecca will be taking the winner’s spot in Best Fiction.
20 Nominees
I’ve made little graphics for each nominee below. The rating (+amount of ratings) are correct at the time of writing this post on the 17th of November. And the release dates are the American release date (for instance Venco comes out in 2024 here in the UK).
Predictions for Top 10
While, some books have a higher rating than some on here, or even less ratings – such as Bookshops & Bonedust and Starling House – I think the kinds of people who vote in the Goodreads Choice Awards will vote for them.
All the books on this list have been popular on BookTube and/or BookTok which is, let’s be honest, the predominant voters in these awards. Plus, they’ve been pretty visible and in the recommendations on Amazon (which owns Goodreads).
Predicted Winner
Tress of the Emerald Sea; Brandon Sanderson

Everyone I’ve heard who has read this book have loved it and I think it’s the most well received of Sanderson’s “Secret Projects” so far.
I think it will be a close call with Hell Bent, as Bardugo won this category with Ninth House (the 1st book in the series) when it came out in 2019. However, even though it is highly rated, the people I watch on YouTube have been disappointed by it.
I’m also really excited to read Tress as they’re saying it has The Princess Bride vibes đź’–
Thoughts
I know a lot of people have been disappointed in the Goodreads Choice Awards this year. They have gotten rid of several categories to seemingly only introduce “Romantasy”, which is a genre that is incredibly popular at the moment (but so many of the books are sequels or quite a way into the series…). There is also a major issue with the lack of diversity in the categories, which is also the case for this category.
Overall, I’m pretty excited to read these books as I do think it’s quite varied in the types of Fantasy and the stories. I currently own 3 of the nominees (Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries; A Day of Fallen Night and The Last Tale of the Flower Bride) and I’ve just started Legends & Lattes, so there are several I already intended to read when they came out.
Obviously, a lot of these nominees are in hardback, so I will be waiting for a lot to come out in paperback next year.
What are your prediction for the Goodreads Choice Awards 2023? Who are you voting for?
Thanks for reading!
I hope you’re having a lovely day and staying safe ♥
