Disclaimer:
I want to do something fun for spooky season! Throughout October I will be reviewing spooky kpop videos, but sadly the kings of spook: VIXX won’t be on the list, nor will Sunmi, SHINee, Block B, Red Velvet or Gain. They have fantastic spooky videos and if you haven’t listened to them I would highly recommend them, but they aren’t new to me. I hope you’ll happily meet new artists with me or roll your eyes that I’ve somehow missed your faves! ♥
Primary is a hip hop artist and record producer. He has been active since 2004 and has worked with Zion T., Dynamic Duo and MBLAQ.
ChoA was a member of AOA which debuted in 2012 and has since done musical and MC work. However, she has been on hiatus since leaving AOA in 2017.
IRON is a piece of shit who was sentenced for abusing his ex-girlfriend and I won’t be talking about his part in this song and video.
Don’t Be Shy is from the 2015 album “2”. Primary doesn’t appear on the track, he is the arranger and composer (so the producer? I know nothing about what a producer does 😂).
Story:
The video doesn’t have a storyline. It’s more of a homage to the spooky, witch vibe of the 90’s. I love it and the use of Pokemon cards in the place of tarot type cards was so cute~
This song is about a woman telling the person they like not to be shy as both are hiding good feelings for each other:
Our hands slightly touch and I don’t know what to do
It’s getting awkward and after we look at each other
We’re just smiling, still don’t really know
I don’t think I’m alone on this
The only thing that I’m a little confused about is that there is more of a lesbian witchy vibe, especially with the line “be careful or I might see up your skirt” which is sung by ChoA, but then we get the line:
Come to me boy, make me want you more
I’ll pretend I don’t know and lose to you
Any thoughts on this?
Visuals:
This has such 90’s vibes. There are a lot of lighting and editing effects that give it a spooky, but cool feel. The colour palette is also lovely.
The video looks like it’s filmed on a potato which gives it a retro feel that goes so well with ChoA’s vocals.
Vocals:
ChoA’s voice is so great in this song. Along with the cool reggae rhythm, her voice makes it an enjoyable chill and slightly evocative listen.
It makes me want to go back and listen to AOA songs!
I think the inclusion of a male rapper breaks the song in an unwanted way. And I looked up the lyrics… it makes no sense to be included. Maybe if it was Zion. T, his style would have fit a lot better with the song (and with different lyrics), I would have enjoyed that part.
Thanks for reading! I hope you’re having a great Halloween! Be safe and kind~
