4. Big Bang “Haru Haru” MV/Song Review!

It’s Wednesday and I will say I definitely put this off! My essay came first and then I was feeling pretty good about the the day and everything, so listening and watching to Big Bang’s ‘Haru Haru’ (which came 4th on Soompi’s list) was not something I wanted to do haha ^^”

But here it is! I hope I don’t offend anyone… ^^”

Story:

The story of the MV is as follows. At the beginning GD and his squad see GD’s girlfriend rejecting TOP. GD is not happy with TOP trying to get with his girlfriend, however, he is even more unhappy when the girlfriend leaves him for TOP.

However, the reason for this is that the girlfriend (played by Park MinYoung) has a terminal illness (I think cancer, but I may be wrong) and she asked TOP to pretend to be her boyfriend, so that he won’t see her suffer and then suffer because of her dying, I think….

(I understand that you don’t want others to suffer, but he was going to anyway because he’d know you had died… plus he went through the heartbreak of you breaking up with him as well…)

Anyway, Taeyang can’t bear to see his bro and the girlfriend suffering because of the separation, so he calls GD who comes running to the hospital, however, it’s too late and the woman has died.

So, I think the actual song may be about not wanting the person to leave, that you know there is something going on, but you will stay by them…

When I looked at the lyrics (which you can seeย here)ย and I was wrong… GD was so upset and angry at being left in the MV, but the song, from what I interpret it as, is about letting go and cherishing the memories you had together, I mean this is the chorus:

screenshot_2015-12-16-18-54-03.png“Donโ€™t look back and leave
Donโ€™t find me again and just live on
Because I have no regrets from loving you,
so only take the good memories
I can bear it in some way
I can stand it in some way
You should be happy if you are like this
Day by day it fades away

Oh, girl, I cry, cry
Youโ€™re my all, say goodbye”

Visuals:

screenshot_2015-12-16-18-53-10.pngOh my gosh… watching this hurts my eyes, for several reasons. The first being how the frame isn’t full, there is a black edge and for quite a darkly lit video, everything is just so bleh… And we swiftly move on to number 2, which is the terrible quality. I understand, I really do, that this was in the days where YG were not the great and almighty YG that we know today, but it’s not going to stop me moaning :p

And also, the clothes and general styling of the members. The groups that debut now should breathe a huge sigh of relief that even if they are styled badly for their debut (which is rare nowadays right?) they don’t look as bad as the 2nd generation idols (they are the 2nd right?) such as Big Bang, Super Junior and TVXQ…

I mean all the way through it was like looking at a the offspring of hip hop and emo… They all look so young and they haven’t grown into their faces yet and the styling makes them look, I don’t want to say ugly because I love this idiots, but they don’t look great…

To be honest I don’t really like this video, visually speaking. At all… I’m sorry!! The only thing I find compelling is the story and the vocals

Vocals:

Daesung and Seungri, my vocalist babies were the star of the song for me. I love their voices and hearing them sing after each other or together makes my day. To be honest, I may never moan about how many lines GD, TOP or Taeyang get in a song these days, because I never realised how little they got in Haru Haru! And to be fair to him, Taeyang didn’t get much either here, although his voice still sounds as soulful and smooth as it does now!

I quite like hearing GD sing, so on that level I enjoyed his vocal performance. I did feel that his and TOP’s rapping was not as powerful or enticing as it has become, but it is still good and it shows how mature and far each of the members have come.

Star Ratings:

  • Understandable Storyline: 3/5โ˜†
  • Video Production: 1.5/5โ˜†
  • Vocals: 3/5โ˜†
  • Overall Package: 5/10โ˜†

Thank you for reading~

  1. Oh, I agree with you on many points but I have to disagree with what you said about GD and TOP’s rapping in this song. I think that was, and still is up to now, one of their most powerful song in terms of rapping.
Haru Haru is beautifully written, and the three vocalists’ talent is fully displayed. A pure old dope. No wonder why it’s the favorite song of most Big Bang fans.

    • And that’s what is great about many things, the different opinions something can garner. I think I prefer the more recent Big Bang vocals, however I completely agree that ‘Haru Haru’ is beautifully written ^^

      • Yes, god bless opinion divergence! Hum, I’m not a big fan of Big Bang’s music since Monster even though they did release nice songs. I guess I’m an old-school kind of person, haha! What’s your favourite song?

      • Exactly! Ah I see. Monster was a good era thought, probably my favourite of theirs ^^ There is nothing wrong with being old-school ๐Ÿ™‚ My favourite is their Japanese song ‘Tell Me Goodbye’ I think it really plays to each members abilities and it’s one of my fave GD looks, plus there is a Daesung in the rain :p
