I never thought I would like a band called ‘The Oral Cigarettes’, but that is the power of YouTube and procrastination for you!
I hope you enjoy~
Story:
From watching this mv I feel that the woman involved is very angry, obvious I know. But I’m not sure where her anger is directed. Normally I would say that it was about another person, but there were aspects of the video where I feel the anger is directed to herself, such as when she uses the lipstick to draw on the mirror, maybe I looked to deep into that ^^”. Also there were times were she was very apathetic and seemed to be angry or disconnected to the world around her.
I couldn’t find English lyrics to this video, however, the actual video (which you can view above) does have English captions (CC) and from that I was able to get a better idea.
The song is called ‘Hate’, and that word is very frequent! I feel that, from the lyrics, I was sort of on track but there is a definite element of hating a male (which a little bit of self-hate). Also on a few more watches I noticed that the clothes in the wardrobe she was tugging at were male clothes.
However, I did get a bit confused with this lyric:
“Not you but I should have died”
Was she angry that he had died and left her and she thinks that she should have died instead? Or is that not a literal thing? I think it was be that he died… mainly because of the affection she seems to have at the necklace she picks up and that there are lulls in her anger that seem like something has happened to disconnect her from everything around her, which does happen when you lose someone close to you (in my experience). Another lyric is that he died to save her, but then she pushes the camera which is like a person, so is it that his mind/happiness died? This could be open to a lot of interpretation I feel!
What did you think?
Visuals:
I really like this video, it was very pretty in a chaotic way. I loved the scenes with the woman in the bedroom mostly. Especially when the music lowered in volume and pace, it gave the video a very beautiful effect and was a nice break from the intense music and incessant ‘Hate’ haha
I like that the band were playing in the room (at a separate time to the woman being filmed) and that near the end there were feathers everywhere which kind of related the two rooms together. And that there was a sort of frantic element to both the band and the woman.
Vocals:
Takuya Yamanaka is the main vocalist and he has a great voice. I especially liked the lull where his voice become a lot more melodic and gentle and there was a slight rise in pitch to it. It sounded really beautiful and fit very well with the images on the screen.
I thought the band played the instruments really well and they didn’t overpower the vocalist which is wonderful and everything I ever wish for when I listen to a band, especially one with such a kind of rocky/indie vibe.
